Leduc County Straw Shop

Our team was proud to offer its services for a interesting agricultural / residential build in Leduc County, Alberta. Completed in the Fall of 2023, it was Savick’s most technically demanding project to date.

The package was composed of 29 prefabricated panels, with some walls reaching an impressive 25’ in height. A crew of local carpenters assembled the R40 straw walls with a 90 tonne crane over a period of 1.5 days. The roof was site constructed with parallel chord trusses, with a slab-on-grade foundation.

Savick worked closely with the building owner to design the structure, with professional review completed by KTA Structural Engineers. The space was finished by the building owner and Tuson Contracting.

The building owner was able to bale his own straw for the project, which required the equivalent of nearly 25 large round bales. The chopped straw insulation and light wood frame is currently storing close to 40 tonnes of CO2e for the life of the building.
