Straw Panels
What is a Savick Straw Panel?
A Savick Straw Panel is a high-performance, prefabricated structural insulated panel designed to replace traditional carbon-intensive wall systems. Unlike manual straw bale, these panels are manufactured in a controlled shop environment using a specialized double-stud timber frame to ensure long-term durability and structural precision.
Core Features
The Insulation
The core is made of chopped straw (sourced from local Alberta wheat and barley), which is dense-packed into the frame. This process increases the material's thermal resistance to roughly R-3.5 per inch, allowing a 16-inch panel to exceed R-50.
Building Science
The assembly is engineered to be airtight yet vapour-permeable. This "breathable" design allows internal moisture to escape while high-performance weather-resistant barriers protect the structure from the elements.
Safety & Performance
The high density of the packed straw naturally limits oxygen, providing excellent fire resistance and making the panels unappealing to pests. Additionally, no chemicals are added to the chopped straw insulation.
Straw Products

Advertised pricing is based on the area of wall panel required (measured in square meters). Complexity factors and project specific considerations may affect final pricing.
Prefabricated straw roof panels are easy to customize and have a wide variety of applications. Savick’s panels are engineered to meet your project's structural, fire protection, and envelope requirements: with several variations listed below.
Panels are delivered to site with structural framing, sheathing, chopped straw insulation, and weather barrier installed. Savick carpenters work with a local crane service to lift the panels into place.
